NYAS Panel on Dual Use Research
The New York Academy of Sciences will be hosting an event this Thusday, February 2, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A panel of scientists, publishers, and legal experts will discuss the controversy aroused by the recent recommendation by the US National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity that certain methodological details be removed from studies published on the H5N1 virus. This type of research is termed dual use research because it has the potential to be used both for the benefit of humanity and as weapons of bioterrorism. This recent recommendation has sparked a heated debate on how to deal with dual use research.
