Executive Board 2013-2014

Tony Hung, President
 is a junior studying Operations Research in the Engineering School. In addition to his engineering background, he serves on the SEBS Executive Board as the President.  In his spare time, he likes to hang out, eat, game, party, sing, and play guitar with a little bit of harmonica on the side. A native of New York, he is an avid Jets and Nets fan (despite last year’s struggles) and likes all things tech.



Darren Chu, Past President 2012-2013
Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Darren left his high school as the valedictorian, head of the house prefect, and captain of the basketball and tennis teams.  Since coming to Columbia, Darren has held positions on the Engineering Student Council, the Asian American Alliance and Columbia Community Outreach boards.  He competes in intramural basketball at Columbia and is a brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.  He is currently a junior studying Chemical Engineering and has interned in the Financial and Oil & Gas industries.


Christine Chen, Vice President, Project Lead
 is a junior at Columbia Engineering, majoring in biomedical engineering and hoping to attend medical school. She is currently involved with research at a lab on campus, where she is learning tons about cell and tissue engineering. When she is not volunteering, Christine enjoys learning different languages, spending time with her close friends, and playing basketball.



Christa Shen, Vice President, Events
Christa is a sophomore in Columbia College majoring in Environmental Biology. She loves exploring the outdoors, so she hopes to pursue a career involving field research. In her spare time, she enjoys running around, spontaneously dancing, and spending time with friends.



Akiko Shimizu, Vice President, Communiations
Akiko is a sophomore in Columbia Engineering interested in pursuing a major in Earth and Environmental Engineering. In her spare time she enjoys working with digital art, music, and origami. She looks forward to continued collaboration with her fellow club members and is hopeful of the good that can be brought about by the activities and contributions of SEBS both to the campus and the city beyond its gates.


Robert Viramontes, Vice President, Finance
Robert is a freshmen at Columbia Engineering, hoping to study Electrical Engineering! He is interested in the intersection between technology and art, and how each can help to inform and enhance the other. He loves being at Columbia because of the amazing people he has met and opportunities he has had, like becoming involved in SEBS! Outside of class, he enjoys exploring New York City with friends and visiting museums (and Apple stores throughout NYC because they’re museums in their own right!).


kevKevin Yan, Vice President, Publicity
is currently a junior at Columbia College, majoring in biochemistry. In his free time, he enjoys following sports teams from his home state of Texas, including the Cowboys, Rangers, and Mavericks. When he’s not doing research in a lab or studying for a Mowshowitz immunology exam, Kevin can be found spending time with his close friends over his favorite TV shows, Modern Family, Shark Tank, or Master Chef.

Tanay Bhandarkar, Operating Board
Tanay is a freshman in Columbia College, thinking about majoring in Astrophysics. He is from Westchester, NY. In addition to SEBS, he is a member of RedShift and Club Zamana. In his free time, he likes to play basketball and ultimate Frisbee. He really enjoys watching professional sports teams, especially the Knicks, Yankees and Jets.

MeLesley Cordero, Operating Board
Lesley is a first-year student in Columbia Engineering, hoping to major in Chemical Engineering. In addition to engineering, she is interested in health and education reform, political science, and computational biology research. As to some background, she is from Upstate New York and is a Columbia Quest Scholar. Besides her academic interests, she enjoys reading, tumblr, eating, watching entire series on Netflix at a time, classic rock music, and has been a vegetarian for three years!

lauraLaura Jao, Operating Board
Laura is currently a freshman in Columbia College hoping to pursue a major in biology or neuroscience and behavior. She plans to take on the pre-med track and become a surgeon in the future. In addition to SEBS, she is an active member of the LLC RHLO and Charles Drew Premedical Society, In her free time, she loves to bake, cook, and create art in the form of digital media, videos, clothes, and paintings.

Christine Liu is a junior in SEAS majoring in Earth and Environmental Engineering and minoring in Chemical Engineering. She hopes to pursue a career involving research and development of alternative energies. In addition to SEBS, she is involved in AIChE’s Chem-E-Car team and Columbia EcoReps. In her free time, Christine loves to attend events on campus, watch TV shows, play tennis, and spend time with her friends.

Cristina is a First Year at Columbia College (Class of 2017) hoping to purse a double major in Biology and Math. In addition to SEBS, she is an active member of CUFSP and is currently interning at WKCR on campus. She is a native New Yorker who enjoys being in nature, teaching younger students, and learning something new about science each day. She’s interested in doing field research over the summer going into sophomore year.
